Alina is a first-generation U.S. citizen, born and raised in New Mexico. Her Chilean heritage and intimacy with her family’s immigration story has fueled an interest in the human condition; a common theme in her art and life.
Her artmaking practice is often an exploration, dissection, and reflection of being human. Her love of emotion draws her into portraiture as the basis of her body of work. She is often inspired by the surreal or the magical elements of life. She primarily works with oil paint and is trained in painting & drawing. Alina enjoys experimentation in her artistry and has experience in printmaking, ceramics, papier mache, photography, filmmaking, animation, weaving, and more.
Alina is working on her BA in Art Education at the University of New Mexico and has spent much of her career at ArtStreet, an open studio program that seeks to make art and community accessible to people experiencing homelessness. She currently works for the Harwood Art Center as a mural instructor for their Youth Mural afterschool program and a teaching artist for their apprenticeship programming for youth at Highland High School. She is also involved in the Arts-in-Medicine program at UNM, where a diversity of healing arts and creative encounters are implemented to revitalize relationships with self and others, transform medical environments, and enrich communities.
For her, art and the act of creating is an intrinsic human need that is necessary for healing and liberation. This principle guides her professional work to the intersection of community-based arts and healing arts and reflects her love of working with a variety of people and age groups.
I’d love to hear from you.
